Ovarian cancer is a very commune affection that kills about sixteen thousand women per year.

It all starts with the cells that compound the tissue of the ovaries and the surrounding area, including the fallopian tube. The normal and natural process is described by the growing and the cell dividing properties that keep an amount of healthy cells in order to replace the dead or old ones that do not function with full potential.

Sometimes, when there are enough healthy cells to replace the old ones, something happens and triggers another cell dividing process even though it is not needed creating an excess of cells. This sometimes goes different…when the old cells do not die when they should…and the excess cells start to create a mass of tissue that is called a tumor.

Tumors can be malignant or benign. The benign ones do not develop into cancerous affections and they are most of the times harmless when it comes to our lives. They can be easily removed and once that happens they never develop again.

The maligned tumors are cancerous and after a period of time it can develop to a form that cannot be always removed, or in case it can, it grows right back after a certain period of time. They can be a threat and can easily spread toward other body tissues.

The ovarian type cancer can spread and invade other tissue parts.

Getting a treatment for ovarian cancer must always be a well thought decision made with the direct consult and advice of specialized doctor in this sort of affection.  The oncologist can suggest the treatment that you consider fit to try in treating ovarian cancer. There always are side effects and there is no best choice here, only results.

The statistics in this segment show a clear preference of sufferers for the surgery and chemotherapy.  The previous radiation therapy is more and more a thing of the past.

The local therapy consists in the direct removal and destruction of the ovarian cancer while in the pelvis. There are complications in the metastatic cases or the cases where the ovarian cancer, through its cells, spread to other organs. (Even though it can affect other organs …it is still called ovarian cancer, because it develops in the same manner with the same cancerous malignant cells).

There is the interperitoneal chemotherapy that consists in directly inserting the chemical substances with a slim tube into the abdomen or pelvis.

And the systematic chemo can be made both by injection or oral ingestion.

Because all kinds of cancerous treatments impact the whole cell structure, the side effects are always present. They can depend on the extent or the type and it is important to know that they do not act perfectly similar. This is why its important to talk it trough your gynecologist oncologist, in order to be prepared.

Ovarian cancer, ovarian affections, abdominal pains, tubes tight up, abnormal vaginal bleeds, sickness, confusion, death, low lifespan, high risks, other pains. Lifetime risks, 40, 000 dead women, painful or non symptomatic apparitions…causes…other risks, food, genetics, other cancers…these are not only terrifying words…these are not only causes, symptoms, effects, conclusions, responses, treats, statistics and social studies…these are messages that a lot of people decide to wear on themselves…on their t-shirts, or other clothing articles…

Americans have their way of inducing the capitalistic view in every aspect of the day to day life. Marketing has it way of transmitting a message, creating an impact. Whether the created impact is a positive or negative one …is up to you.

The main idea of all this media attention is to create an impact…. To create the public awareness is powerful weapon…is a tool that the media uses in order to create a certain chaos in the visual perception of those who take their liberties for granted…never asking themselves where is their lifestyle will lead them…We all know the causes, but try somehow to think that we are invincible and sometimes is hard to believe that such a thing could ever happen to us.

Why not? What is so hard to believe that we are the same…there are the same risks, the same chances of developing it …but only our myopic and self centered perspective can limit an important aspect so much that we even try to avoid it..Well not anymore. Media will open some eyes eventually…

They had numerous attempts to do so, firstly by scaring the female population with terrifying messages posted on various objects mainly in the obstetrics and gynecology medical centers. After this some posters emerged in clubs, discos, libraries, of course in the women bathroom you had tones of brochures and flyers and lots of litigation and ovarian tubes tight up…and so many other forms of delivering a message that although known …easily overlooked.

The T- shirts firstly appeared as an irony to the already existing hand bracelets and hand bandanas with the seriously emphasized message: “Ovarian cancer kills”. The shirts had of course a somehow funny perspective on the same principle that ovarian cancer does kill…but painted in a sarcastic view…never before seen.

Initially the T Shirts were designed for extra large individuals, and in some late post hippy period, they were bought by big fat ugly bikers that galloped the country on their choppers and tired of the previous message on their shirts that said “I am a skinny, educated, hot blonde trapped in this big fat ugly biker’s body”.

Then, even though the shirts with “ovarian cancer kills” or “had an abnormal vaginal bled?” where still designed only for males, the target was altered towards the declared misogynists’…

There weren’t anything fancy but funny none the less…and in a period where more and more women were detected with this affection…the shirts alone exploded on the market and nowadays the marketing part covers both the need for awareness in this medical segment and a sinister joke for all sarcastic individuals.

Ovarian Cancer Stages

Published on Feb 03 2010, in the categories: Uncategorized

The Ovarian cancer is a cancerous growth that affects different parts of the ovary and the close surrounding tissue.
<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
Ninety percent of all cancers that act in this area are classified as epithelial, and are believed to arise from the epithelium, or the surrounding surface of the ovary. Besides this recent research studies have shown that the Fallopian tube can also represent a potential source for the apparition of this disease. Because of the close relationship between the ovaries and the tube, a hypothesis affirms that the cells can also mimic the ovarian cancer conformation. There are other types of cancers that arise from an egg cell or the germ cell tumor but also the supporting related cells.

Diagnosing the ovarian cancer begins with a gynecological and physical exam, including the pelvic region, a small blood exam, and a TVU or Trans vaginal ultrasound (a progressive method of screening the vaginal interior region with the help of ultrasounds that penetrate the tissue and reflect a clear inside image). The best diagnosis is set after all test are done and sometimes a surgically intervention is mandatory in being precise. Other forms of examination are the abdominal cavity inspection, biopsy, when the gynecologist takes a small tissue sample in order to analyze it under a microscope, and the abdominal fluid check, a very important part in detecting the cancerous cells. Doing a regular checkup is very essential in detecting a possible cancer in its early development stages.

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and even surgery are the main treatments and often they can make wonders, depending on the stage of the cancerous cells and its impact on the tissues surface.

The down side is that in many cases, the cause of the ovarian tissue diseases remains unknown. The women that reached a certain age, and those who have a genetically predisposition, have a close degree relative with the disease, have an even higher probability of developing the ovarian cancer.

These genetic issues, of passing the disease on and developing it after a certain age is explained to be the cause of a specific gene’s mutation.  The increased risk can be statistically seen in the infertile women that have endometriosis (a medical condition in which cells type endometrial flourish in and appear in an area outside the uterine cavity) and those women that are carrying on a estrogen replacement treatment (the ones after post menopause).

The best practical advice revolves around the birth control pills consumption that scientifically manages to reduce the risk in very high proportions. Other low risk factor consists in surgically blocking the uterine tube, an operation called tubal ligation. This can also reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer with 85 percent.
The main issue that stumbles upon the medical world is that the exact cause of the ovarian cancer is mainly unknown. The risk of apparition is high but a fact remains certain: the more kids a woman has the less risk of developing it exists.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms

In the United States, 25,500 new cases were detected only in the last year and 17,000 women were killed by this disease. The increase rate risk is indirectly proportionate with the age and pregnancy decrease rates. Lifespan stop risk is about 1.6 percent, and suffering women with problematic genetic heritage or with relatives have a 5 percent risk. Women with the BRCA1 (a gene that is constant suffer mutations and it is usually associated and held responsible for the early stages in the development of breast cancer, this genes being classified as tumor suppressors and manage to maintain genomic integrity) or BRCA2 have unfortunately a more higher risk that measures between 30 percent and 55 percent, depending, of course, on the type of mutation.

As a statistic the ovarian cancer is the fourth leading death cause from cancerous afflictions in women and the leading death cause from gynecological diseases.

Some difficulties in identifying the ovarian cancer come from the fact that the vast majority of cases are classified or associated with abdominal distensions.
ovarian-cancer-symptoms

Ovarian cancer is known in the medial books for its peculiar non symptomatic early development stages. An early detection would of course will result in a better survival chance , with the presumption that first stage (number I ) and second cancer stage (number II) will in time develop and evolve in to the third and fourth stage cancers, but unfortunately this is not a demonstrated medical fact.

We do not know much about the evolution of the ovarian cancer, its well defined stages and if those can be definitely separated. The majority of ovarian cancer sufferers report just one or two symptoms and most of the times it is related to the abdominal area, pains, discomforts at this level, gas mass,  pains in the lower parts of the back, a constant urinary sensation or stinging urine , diarrhea or constipation, the constant feeling of tiredness and the lack of hunger are just a few of the semi symptomatic states of the affliction , and some, more clear, like an abnormal bleeding from the vaginal area , a discomfort or pelvic pain, or unexpected  weight loss.  In numerous cases there is a fluid buildup also in the abdominal sector.

In 2007, the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, Gynecologic Foundation for Cancerous Afflictions Society and The American Society for Cancer classified the following the prime symptoms of ovarian cancer: Bloating, back and leg pains that increase and intensify over a short period of time, pelvic and abdominal pains, difficulty in eating meals properly, stomach aches and stool problems like diarrhea or constipation, alternative diarrhea and constipation periods, feeling full after a small meal, urinary frequency altered, stinging sensations, pains during sexual intercourse, abnormal vaginal bleeding, irregularity in the menstrual schedule, breathing troubles .

Ovarian cancer was baptized the silent killer because of its peculiar symptoms and the poor chances of remission. But the symptoms stated above are likely to appear in ovarian cancer diseased  women in the general population, so it is better to keep an eye for them.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Published on Feb 02 2010, in the categories: Uncategorized

Ovarian cancer is an affection lately detected with unspecific symptoms , and a naturally rapid evolution and frequent recurrences after medical treatment. Because of this the ovarian cancer represents one of the prime causes for women’s death. That is why there is a constant public awareness in order to detect this disease on time, in its very early stages.

What are the risk factors?

If a member of your family has it (mother, daughter, sister), the risk of developing a form of ovarian cancer becomes very high. For a small girl born by a mother who will have or had this kind of affliction, the risks are 40 percent to develop it after puberty.

Genetic conciliating seems to be a good idea in cases where women, generation after generation keep developing ovarian or breast cancer.  Many of these women after a certain age decide to surgically intervene in order to remove the ovaries or do the ovarectomy surgery. Even with this method, the risk is not 100 percent reduced, but somewhere over 75 percent.

Recent studies have shown that women who use cosmetic powder in order to stay dry in the intimate area have a 60 percent more risk developing ovarian cancer.

Other cosmetic form that encourage the development of cancerous cells are intimate deodorant that can double the existing risk even in healthy genetic-free disposition women.

The research also says that women who have been using birth control pills for five years and keep using, have a lower risk in developing it. It is a time effective result. As long as you keep using, the risk gets smaller and smaller.

Birth and pregnancy is also relevant in fighting against ovarian cancer. Statistics show that mother with three children are not likely to develop this disease, and women with no kids have an approximately 40 percent chases of contacting it.

Breast feeding is also important in reducing the risk because of the special organic substances that consolidate during the first stage after giving birth.
ovarian-cancer-awareness-2

It is said that the best method in detected and being aware of the ovarian cancer is through regular pelvic examinations. Ask you gynecologist about the Papanicolau Tests.
These regular screenings have a limited value. The bimanual exam has also some advantages, mostly because they are fast, easy and have no significant economics strings attached. The operation can verify certain syndromes that can appear, in the post menopause when it is required that every woman with the palpable ovary syndrome, after menopause to be surgically evaluated. This intervention is strictly clinical and bases itself on the fact that the normal, palpable ovary in the pre menopause can develop a tumor after post menopause.

For a better awareness there are biochemical tests and ultrasonograph screenings or TVU, trans vaginal ultrasound that can show abnormalities in the secretion and on the abdominal level and prevent a possible ovarian cancer to develop.

Types Of Treatment In Ovarian Cancer

Published on Feb 02 2010, in the categories: Uncategorized

The ovarian cancer represents the disease in which the maligned cells or cancerous cells, develop in the ovarian tissue and from here the tumor extends to the neighbor organs, once the disease has reached an advanced stage. In many countries it is considered one of the three primary causes of death. The negative aspect of this particular disease is that it is diagnosed most of the time in an advanced stage and the therapy methods become useless. This is linked directly to the lack of physical symptoms in its developing stages, or unspecific symptoms that a regular individual does not take into consideration in order to go visit a doctor. This is why a very important step in preventing ovarian cancer is keeping the people informed regarding the whole aspects of this disease and the importance of finding it in its early stages.

There are on the other hand some methods that proven their worth in reducing a woman’s risk to develop ovarian cancer.
Breast feeding and pregnancy; The birth of one or several children, especially if the first birth take place under the age of 25, and breast feeding , are one of the protection measures against ovarian cancer and reduces the risk of any kind of affection.

There are some surgically embedded measures in order to prevent cancerous cells to spread and develop an affliction. This consists in an operation that links the ovarian channels. It has been proven that this method really manages to reduce the risk of ever developing a cancerous problem at this level. It is recommended for women with high risks in developing cancerous diseases because of the genetic makeup and the genealogical disposition and only after consulting a specialist.

Hysterectomy: Has been proven to reduce the risk of ovarian problems including the development and apparition of cancerous cells, but this is not a specially design surgical intervention just for cancerous affection. Only in the possibility of a person with bad genetic heritage and a history of cancerous affections in the family, only those can make the requested in order to suffer the surgical intervention and most of the cases. This kind of treatment finishes with chemotherapy and radiation.
