A new ovarian cancer diagnostic tool, which, according to studies may help determine the risk of malignancy or benign pelvic mass, is now available in Europe. This simple blood test can provide valuable information on the assessment of epithelial ovarian cancer, the most lethal gynecological cancer. It is an important immunological test, which runs on the system developed by Abbott ARCHITECT, HE4 was the first automated test available worldwide.

Research has shown that this new ovarian cancer diagnostic device, used together with other tests, such as CA125 assessment can help measure the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer, both before menopause, and postmenopausal women presenting in the pelvic mass. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, five-year survival rate of patients with cancer is of 46 percent.

However, when the disease is diagnosed early, this rate increases to 94 percent. Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death after contracting a gynecological cancer and the fifth cause of death from cancer in females. Ovarian cancer affects one in 72 women, this disease represents 31 percent of cancers of the female genitalia. After menopause, ovarian cancer risk increases considerably.

The ability of this test to help doctors to establish whether it is benign or malignant pelvic mass is an important step both for patients and for professionals", said Michael Warmuth, vice president of Abbott Diagnostics. "ARCHITECT HE4 test comes in to help doctors determine the most appropriate treatment for patients," he completes.
